Sneak Preview of Senior Thesis - HAVEN - A Response Model to Disaster Relief
The goal of this project is to develop a response model to climatic disasters that will offer services and support. To achieve this goal, the following objectives must be met: to identify disaster support needs, to develop a support system for quick response, to identify units that offer a great degree of efficiency and sustainability, and to create a community with units that project engagement and provide safety and security. These objectives will be achieved though creating a disaster response center in Nashville, Tennessee that contracts out reclaimed, furnished shipping containers to areas that have been destroyed by natural disasters. These containers will each house an area of need for the inhabitants and will be formed as a building through interlocking the containers. This project will offer a solution for a disaster support system. The project is also economical and sustainable by using shipping containers that have been abandoned and repurposing them for better cause.

LEGO Corporate Office
The design concept for The LEGO Group office, incorporates their mission and vision, “Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow” and “Inventing the future of play.” LEGO Corporation’s purpose is to inspire and develop in the minds of children and adults, creativity, construction, and purposeful play. These statements, along with the key concepts of the LEGO toy being interlocking, constructive, and playful, create the design of the space. This is achieved through creating a floor plan that interlocks departments by LEGO color coded areas and the furniture, floor, and ceiling.

The Florence Hotel
The design for this mixed and adaptive reuse building includes hotel-style rooms, lobby space, restaurant, offices, and function/meeting spaces. The design solution includes a sensitive response to sustainable design, accessible and universal design, through appropriate space planning within the spatial envelope, code compliance, lighting, and interior finishes and furnishings.
Florence was founded as a railroad hub for all surrounding cities, and still holds that title today, so it was only fitting that the design of the hotel incorporate the largest part of Florence’s culture.

Green House
“Green House” is a co-working space where students, businesses, and independents could all have a shared working environment. A space was created for the social gathering of a group of people who work independently, but who share values, and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with like-minded talented people in the same space.
The concept of a tree ring was brought into the design through space planning and patterns to signify that tree rings equal growth, an analogous way of showing the growth of people coming together.

"Spotlight Bar and Grill"
MBA students were working on a project to revitalize downtown Rock Hill, SC. Each group of students was to select an existing building and select a venue for that location, from their marketing research, that Winthrop students would be willing to visit and hang out at. This group came up with the idea for a building that was a restaurant, bar, and gathering space during the day, and at night, a nightclub, bar, and restaurant. This group is working with the Town of Rock Hill to actually implement this restaurant in the chosen building.
Finishes such as hardwood flooring, brick, rusty orange paint, and recycled rustic metal were used to give the space a “southern bar” feel, but making it inviting and family oriented at the same time.
The nightclub/dance area was designed to be modern and inviting during the day for various functions, but can still be a fun dance club at night for college students.

RESIDENTIAL
Custom Kitchen for Stay-at-Home Event Planner
Most of the planner's client meetings are held in the kitchen to participate in cake/food tastings. To meet her needs, a large central island was built in the kitchen with bar seating to hold food for the tastings, as well as large storage baking elements. Built into the counter top is a large, touch screen that is wired to a projector in the ceiling. The projector streams to a screen that electronically runs down from a soffit on the opposite side of the kitchen. This element is so that the event planner can play slide shows and pictures for her clients, as well as serving for her sons needs when he is in the kitchen with her.

Two-Story Family Home with Mother-in-Law Suite
The concept of “Southern Hospitality” will be incorporated into the design of this home by creating a welcoming environment upon approaching the home, using grand shutters, columns, and South Carolina’s signature blue porch. The interior will carry this out through traditional furniture, hardwood floors, coffered ceilings, moldings, paneling, and trim, and historic colors.
Sustainability will be featured in furniture, finishes, building construction, a vegetable garden, and technologies, such as, solar panels, rainwater collection systems, a natural swimming pool, and a geothermal HVAC system.
